International Day of Women and Girls in Science - 2019
In order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, the United Nations General Assembly decided in 2016 to declare 11th February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
From 11 to 15 February, CIC nanoGUNE, the Materials Physics Center (MPC, CSIC - UPV/EHU), CIC biomaGUNE and the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC) will celebrate that day, organizing a series of events which aim is to bring visibility to the activities of women working in scientific research, to break with the archetypical masculine roles usually attributed to science and technology, and encourage scientific careers choices among girls and teenagers.
Events
1. HAND IN HAND. Those who collaborate in science disseminate it jointly
February 11, 19:00, Koldo Mitxelena
General public
Reyes Calvo (CIC nanoGUNE) & Miguel Moreno (DIPC-CFM)
Celia Rogero (CFM) & Sebastian Bergeret (DIPC-CFM)
Aitziber López Cortajarena (CIC biomaGUNE) & Fernando López-gallego (UNIZAR - CIC biomaGUNE)
The talks will be in Spanish.

2. Do you know any women in science?
February 11 and 12 at nanoGUNE and biomaGUNE
School children
This is a workshop for girls and boys between 10 and 11 years old. The female researchers of the organizing centers will lead different activities to highlight the role of women in science over history and perform science demonstrations. The workshop will have a duration of 2 hours.
3. High-school visits
February 11 at CFM and DIPC
Teenagers
In the framework of the regular school visits program of the CFM and DIPC, a group of students will live an exclusively women-driven visit and will learn about women in science. The visit is already arranged with the school.
4. Open Science from the inside out: concept, challenges and implementation
February 13, 12:00, Centro Carlos Santamaría (UPV/EHU)
Open to the scientific community
In this talk Eva Méndez will approach the concept of ‘Open Science‘ from the reflection of ideas and policies discussed in the context of the European Union, but also addressing the challenge of implementation for the different agents involved. The main initiatives that have been launched in this area (PlanS, OSPP-REC, etc.) as well as the barriers to the necessary cultural change will be discussed.
5. Amona's power
February 14, 10:30 at Materials Physics Center (Paseo Manuel de Lardizabal 5, 20018 Donostia – San Sebastian)
+ 55 years women (THE ACTIVITY IS FULLY BOOKED and registration has been closed)
Guided visit and workshop devoted to women above 55. The visit will allow you to share the insights of the excellent and international research activity performed at our centers. In the workshop we will find the scientific potential hidden behind everyday things, allowing the scientist that lives inside all of us to get out. We will show you a bunch of experiments that can easily be reproduced back at home.
6. Science is indeed a girls' thing.
February 15, 16:00 at CIC nanoGUNE (Tolosa Hiribide 76, 20018 Donostia-San Sebastian)
Women teenagers (THE ACTIVITY IS FULLY BOOKED and registration has been closed)
This is an open workshop for secondary school students. Lead by the female researchers of our centers, the teenagers will have an opportunity to be “scientists for a day” and perform hands-on experiments in nanoscience.
* Parental permission is requested to participate in this workshop.
