The European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund is preparing for the delivery and use of its first neutrons. In steady state operation it will provide a much higher intensity of neutrons compared to current facilities, allowing for faster and more detailed experiments. The unique long-pulse neutron source, will enable better resolution and flexibility in experiments.

An update will be given on recent progress at including examples of future science. The process for preparing the transition to a user facility will be outlined as well as the challenges ahead. An update of the recently initiated process of instrument benchmarking will be given as well as current ideas for involving future users to first science experiments.
