Description
Electrical diodes are an essential element in conventional electronics. With the growing use of superconducting materials in quantum technologies, new electrical elements acting on Cooper pairs are demanded. This patent combines Cooper pair tunnelling with the Coulomb blockade effect in small superconducting island to induce a non-reciprocal current behaviour. This effect can be used as a Cooper pair diode, which can be tuned by electrostatic gating potentials. Beside application as a tuneable diode for Cooper pair currents, this effect can also be used as a microwave photon detector.
