On-surface self-assembly, reactions and electronic properties of PXX and binol derivatives

Peri-xanthenoxanthene (PXX) is an O-doped polyaromatic hydrocarbon (OPAH) that offers a range of useful electronic and physical properties; PXX derivatives have previously been exploited as an active organic semiconductor in flexible OLEDs [1,2]. Recently, tweaking the aromatic structure of PXX in various ways has been shown to be a facile approach to adjusting its strength as an electron donor [3]. One such method for changing the electronic characteristics of PXX is through the formation of short, conjugated PXX polymers.
In this work, we examine PXX and PXX derivatives at metallic surfaces. The formation, self-assembly and electronic properties of PXX polymers are studied via scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). We also attempt to synthesise PXX on surfaces via the dehydration reaction of a precursor binol molecule, and look in detail at the resulting self-assembly and on-surface reactions that can take place under idealised conditions.
