In the last years, quantum optics and quantum information have merged
with other areas
of science, like condensed matter or high-energy physics. This opens up
various scientific questions
and poses new theoretical challenges. In this talk I will give a brief
overview of some of
the areas of research that have emerged in that context, like the study
and applications
of emitters close to structured baths, and the development of
theoretical tools to address
many-body quantum problems. In the first case, I will describe the
appearance of new
of many-photon bound states, the preparation of Fock states, the
simulation of long-range
spin interacting models, or the observation of exotic features in
collective decays. In the
second, I will briefly describe the connections with condensed matter
theory problems.

Ignacio Cirac
is a theoretical physicist who works in quantum optics,
quantum information, and quantum many-body physics. In his research he
proposes experiments to demonstrate and investigate interesting quantum
effects, contributes to the theory of quantum information, and he applies the
methods developed there to address problems in condensed-matter and
particle physics. He is best known for his ground-breaking proposals to
realize quantum computers and
quantum simulations in quantum optical systems, in particular using cold
trapped ions.

Since 2001 he is a director of the Max-Planck-Institute for Quantum
Optics in Garching, where he heads the Theory Division. For his research
he has received many awards, among them in 2006 the
Prince-of-Asturias-Prize, in 2013 the Wolff-Prize, and in 2018 the
Max-Planck-Medal.
